Are Shake-Only Diets Right For Me?

We’ve received quite a few questions regarding the new multi-level marketing company called Body By Vi. Some of our members wanted to know if it’s safe, effective, and healthy.

Unfortunately, it’s not black and white. So instead of making a blank statement regarding the company, we’ll tell you 3 stories that indirectly answer your questions.

1) If you haven’t seen Matt Ross lately, you may not recognize him. He’s dropped some serious weight over the last few months. I had the chance last week to ask him how he did it. His exact reply without thinking, “It’s amazing how much of a difference not eating $%$% makes.” Short and sweet.

To really appreciate the impact healthy eating had on his transformation, you had to see him exercise prior to focusing on nutrition. He’d literally walk out of the gym after a 2 hour workout drenched in sweat. His shirt would be soaked from neck to waist. And he would do that every day, and sometimes twice a day. The results: very little change in body composition. Why? He’d throw away all of his hard work at the gym by going home and eating whatever he wanted. His diet was competing with his exercise regimen.

Then he started to focus on cleaning up his eating habits, and the fat started melting off. Does he eat perfect? No. He still has his cheat meals/”drinks.” However, he eats a lot better than before, and it’s made all the difference in the world.

2) Alli, the over the counter weight loss pill, works. When it first came out, we’d sell a few bottles per week. Now we rarely sell 1 bottle every 6 months. Why?

Alli works by blocking the absorption of fat when you eat a meal. So if you were taking Alli, and you ate a meal high in fat, more than likely you’d end up with accident in your pants. So naturally what happens? You eat less and less fat unless you enjoy buying new pants. In retrospect, it was the side effects, not the mechanism of action, that made Alli a success.

People eventually caught on, and just started eat less and less fat without taking Alli. Not only did they save money and the embarrassment of frequent accidents, but it worked just as well.

3) The Atkins diet was widely popular a few years ago. If you aren’t familiar with it, it basically limits the amount of carbohydrates you can eat. In fact, during the first few weeks, it limits you to less than ~30g of carbohydrates per day. I know several people that lost 15+ pounds during the first 2 weeks of the diet. A lot of people had short-term success on it. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who kept the weight off for any substantial amount of time. The long-term success was embarrassingly low. Why?

It called for drastic changes. It wasn’t a “lifestyle” diet. People don’t have the willpower to follow that kind of diet for a long period of time. Although Dr. Atkins was on the right track by focusing on carbohydrates (especially when almost everyone else was focusing on fats), his carbohydrate restrictions were too low. Just ask a bodybuilder how they feel a few weeks out from their show when they start restricting their carbohydrates. Yikes!

Band aids don’t work. If we’ve learned anything from the financial crisis a few years ago, it’s that we shouldn’t sacrifice short-term results for long-term health. If you’re using Body Bi Vi shakes as your sole source of calories per day, I’ll guarantee you’ll lose weight in 30 days and make an impressive transformation. However, I also guarantee you’ll gain it all back and then some within 6 months or less. There are no shortcuts in life. There’s just good habits, hard work , and results!
