Basketball Skill Sessions for 5th and 6th boys and girls

Without question, basketball is a game of skill. No one is born a great shoot. You simply cannot walk onto the court and have an ankle-breaking crossover. It just doesn’t happen.

The best in the NBA still shoot thousands of shots per day. Why? Because repetition breeds excellence. A skill like a crossover or a jab step only improves if it’s repeated over and over and over again.

That’s why games and team practices often fail to make a player better. In a middle school or high school game, the entire team may only take 40 shots. If the best player takes 1/3 of them, which usually happens, that means the 9 other players share 26 shots. That’s only 26 repetitions. How can you improve a skill if you have to share 26 repetitions?

A team practice isn’t much better. By the time a coach does conditioning drills, works on offensive plays, practices team defense, and scrimmages, players may only get 10 minutes of actual skills practice.

So, starting Wednesday, November 7th, we’re offering small group basketball skill workouts for boys and girls in the 5th and 6th grade. During each hour-long session, we’ll drill 3 things over and over and over again:

  • The crossover
  • The jab step
  • The jump shot

That’s it. If a player can improve those three things, she can be a force on the basketball court. She can go from the bench to starting, or from starting to being an all-star. If you ask any kid that’s been through our 4th Quarter Training program over the last 9 years, I don’t know if you’ll find a single one that says his/her crossover, jab, and jump shot hasn’t improved. Why? Because that’s all we do.
