Too busy. Too tired. Too sore. These are the excuses typical college students use to miss workouts. Our Member of the Month for November doesn’t follow this path. Betty Calbreath always finds a way to get it done no matter how much other stuff she has going on in her life.
Betty is a walking example of how to do things right when it comes to your health. Getting results is, in large part, due to your level of discipline with your training and nutrtion. Betty understands that it’s not just about one good workout. Your health is a reflection of the way you live.
Most people choose to coast through life, in terms of their health, until they get a serious health issue that wakes them up. Betty lives her life in a constant, proactivily healthy state. She runs, she lifts weights, she does bootcamp, she attends daily training session religiously. And that kind of dedication is what makes the difference between staying where you are and reaching your goals.
We asked Betty a few questions about her motivations and her routine…..
What got you interested in fitness?
Well, I’ve been playing sports since about first grade. After my freshman year, I realized if I worked harder on my fitness I would improve on many different levels. Then I decided to play softball and soccer at the college level. That’s when I really started to focus not only on my fitness but strength.
How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?
I’m stronger now than I ever have been I keep a set schedule so I know when I can have available time every day to go to the gym. However, I’ve had plenty of very late night study sessions, and I found the best thing to do after staying up till 1:00am studying was getting a work out in. If I don’t do some sort of workout, it feels like I’m missing something at the end of the day.
What tips would you offer someone who is just starting out?
I would tell people who are just getting started to set small goals for themself at first. Overcome small battles then once those become easy, set bigger goals.
What is your current workout routine?
My usual workout routine is everyday Monday-Friday on my lunch break at work. It always makes me feel better knowing I’m doing something instead of just being lazy and eating at lunch.
In your opinion what are the biggest benefits of exercising?
The biggest benefits to exercising is the satisfaction in knowing that you just pushed yourself a little harder than the day before just to get a litter better than you were yesterday.
Have you seen good results? If so could you go into detail about them?
I’ve had great results from exercising. I have lost 30lbs all together and have lost 20% body fat. I have ran in several 5K races this year, and I would have never attempted that distance a year ago. I went from bench pressing just the bar to full sets at 135lbs. I can tell that I am stronger and more fit than I have ever been. Every day is a chance to get better and that is my main focus. I want to be the best I can be in every aspect.
