15,000 Calorie Skinny Jeans Challenge – What is 500 calories?

The Skinny Jeans Challenge at Ageless

Last week we announced our 15,000 Calorie Skinny Jeans contest starting September 5th. If you missed it, check it out here.

Since the announcement, members and non-members have asked us quite a few questions regarding the contest. Instead of answering them individually, we figured a few blog posts would do the trick.

Today, we’re going to tackle the three most common questions.

  1. Do I have to have a MyZone monitor to participate, and if you so, will you have more available?

Yes, you have to have a Myzone monitor to participate. Polar, Garmin, and FitBit won’t work. Because MyZone is the system we use at the gym, it allows us to have access to an online portal for the gym that allows us to see calories burned, MEPS, and total duration spent exercising for every member with a Myzone monitor at Ageless with just a few clicks of the mouse.  It’s a lot more organized and much less time consuming than the pencil/paper method we used for our previous contests. Utilizing MyZone will allow us to offer more contests and challenges throughout the year because of its simplicity and ease of use.

We tried to make the monitors as affordable as possible. You can rent one of for $15 per month, purchase one for a one-time fee of $60 (starting September 1st, it will be $75), or purchase one and have the cost spread out evenly to your monthly membership fee. We also offer a 30 day money-back guarantee on any monitor purchased. We will GLADLY buy your monitor back if you don’t like it.

We will have more monitors in late this week. If you are interested in purchasing or renting one, please let us know ASAP so we can add you to the list.

2. How difficult is it to burn 500 calories per day?

It’s challenging, but not impossible. On average, one class at Ageless per day will burn ~500 calories. Of course, that depends on how much you weigh, if you are a male or a female, and how hard you exercise. Jogging at around 6.5 miles per hour for 45-60 minutes will also burn around 500 calories.

We chose 500 calories per day because the majority of exercise guidelines recommend a 500 calorie daily deficit to lose 1lb of fat per week. Although it’s not an exact mathematical formula and certainly has its flaws, it works. Plus, we also wanted to reinforce that exercise should be done daily.

3. Can I burn calories when I’m not in the gym?

Yes, of course. We just wore our MyZone monitors last night while we played tennis at Big Brick. You can wear them while you jog, walk, or simply rake the leaves. As long as you have the chest strap on, have the black monitor attached to it, and hear the beep, it will automatically track, save, and upload your “workout” next time you come to the gym.

You do NOT have to burn 500 calories at the gym. It can be done anywhere as long as it’s logged on your MyZone monitor.

If you’re as excited as we are to get back into our “high school jeans,” make sure you sign up at the front desk before September 1st.
